Delivering video and audio across the internet presents certain challenges that don't exist with other elements that reside on your website. Elements such as text, graphics and photos are well suited to delivery from a web server, because they are not "time critical". If these elements download a second or two slower than normal, due to a drop in bandwidth, it may go unnoticed by the person viewing your site. Streaming video, however, is "time critical". Small packets of data are sent continuously to the viewer's computer, and rendered on the fly by a media player. It is important that these streaming data packets are not interrupted, or else the media player will need to stop and wait for the data packets to catch up. If you've ever been watching a streaming video clip when it freezes momentarily, and your player flashes "rebuffering", this is due to just such an interruption in data packet delivery.
